How To Reduce Vaginal Dryness
Why Does it Happen?
Vaginal dryness can cause irritation and pain during sex. The most common cause is low estrogen hormone levels from aging, menopause, and after childbirth. Estrogen helps maintain the vagina’s lubrication and suppleness to prevent irritation, thinning, and dryness.
However, other reasons for vaginal dryness can be from certain medications or medical conditions. Low libido and sex drive is another huge factor, as sexual thoughts drive the female body to naturally increase moisture “down there” in preparation for sexual activity.
Over-the-counter moisturizers and lubricants can help (avoid oil-based lubricants which can worsen irritation).
Your doctor may also recommend prescription hormone therapy that stays local such as vaginal estrogen creams, tablets, or rings. Keeping the medication delivery local in the vagina instead of taken by mouth as a pill can minimize side effects. They typically deliver lower doses of estrogen than oral hormone therapy.
Testosterone & Estrogen
Tribulus & Fenugreek
Tribulus & Fenugreek in clinical studies have shown increasing estrogen levels and, therefore, vaginal lubrication and moisture. Additionally, these herbs can help support healthy testosterone levels (yes, testosterone!). Testosterone is naturally produced by women and declines as we age. This key “sex hormone” helps give us sex drive, desire, and arousal for enhanced lubrication.
The most important sex organ you have is… your brain! Saffron herb has demonstrated in research studies to support production of the “feel good” neurotransmitter in the brain (i.e. dopamine) to promote a happy mood. This indirectly can increase blood flow to the vagina for natural lubrication and heightened comfort and satisfaction.
Panax Ginseng has also been proven in clinical studies to have a relaxing effect on the clitoral cavernosal muscle and vaginal smooth muscle to help improve sensation, moisture, and comfort. This herb can also increase nitric oxide levels which drive blood flow to the vagina for enhanced feeling and responsiveness to physical touch and stimulation.
A word from Dr. Stephanie…..
